The Jeans Report

August 30, 2018 Melrose Fisher Fashion, Style Tips, Trends

One thing we can count on from one fashion season to the next is a report on the latest in jeans.

Why is there such a fascination with this iconic clothing item?

I’ve dipped into the vault of comments made by designers, celebrities, and models on the subject of jeans.

How about this from designer Yves Saint Laurent? “I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity—all I hope for in my clothes.”

As fashion evolves, the jean has gone from work uniform to casual outfits and dressy ones. This year denim even appeared on the runway as eveningwear. Who knew? Well, maybe designer Phillip Lim. He says, “You can make jeans and a t-shirt super stylish. It’s what you make of it, you know?” Phillip Lim

Model, Twiggy, shares her jean formula. She says, “Tailored jackets with jeans is a great look for all ages. Dress up with a heel and pretty shirt, or just wear a smart T-shirt under your jacket.”

You could follow her formula as this fashion season is exploding with jackets or exciting blouses that can be worn with jeans.

Looking back, we can all remember a jean style that we had trouble wearing. Does anybody remember low-rise jeans and muffin tops that often went with them? TV host and comedian, Ellen DeGeneres reminds us, “You’re never too old to play. You’re only too old for low-rise jeans.”

Alexa Chung, writer, and fashion designer brings up an excellent point about spending money on the things you wear the most. She says, “I tend to splurge on fancy dresses because I always think I’ll get a lot of wear out of them, but it’s false logic. You should really spend more money on the things you wear every day, like jeans.” Good point!

If you plan to update your jeans, here are a few shopping tips for you.

1. If you wear jeans across several lifestyle categories, be sure you can distinguish your dressy ones from your sporty ones from your casual ones. Yes, there is a difference! One pair of denim will not suit every occasion.

2. If you try on jeans and they’re too big in the waist, ask to have an alterations person take a look at them. Women with smaller waists often need to have the waistband taken in. It’s a common alteration.

3. As low-rise jeans are waning, the high-rise jean is getting more attention. The high-rise jean comes up over the hips and belly and settles at the waist. There is a third option. For women with a thicker waist, the mid-rise jean could be the most comfortable. It rides high in the back, but in front, it ends just under the belly button. Expect to try on a dozen or more pairs of jeans to find your perfect fit. The time you invest in this fit project is worth it!
4. Jean hem width is another factor for finding a great fit in your next pair of jeans. A skinny jean emphasizes your bottom. Many skinny jeans are worn with tunics for this reason. A boot cut jean tapers in slightly at the knee and then flares out at the bottom to about the width of the thigh. They’re great for wearing with boots. A flared jean is more exaggerated than the boot cut jean. It hugs the bottom and the thigh and then goes wide below the knee. It can be an excellent style for balancing the hip and thigh area. The ankle jean lands right at the top of the anklebone or just above. This jean style will show off your sneakers or oxfords.

5. If denim isn’t your thing, take a look at jean styles that come in colors. From spicy to bright, you can have a wardrobe of easy-wear jeans that are in your favorite colors. Another option is to shop for knit pants that have denim details. This is a great alternative for an easy to wear casual pants.

Actress Cameron Diaz says, “I’m like every other woman: a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear. So I wear jeans.” If jeans are your universal default, Lots of Luxe would love to help you maximize their usefulness. We’re here to help whether it’s styling jean outfits for you or helping you purchase some new denim. Get in touch and we’ll begin!

Seven Days Seven Ways – The Folio Suit

August 20, 2018 Melrose Fisher Fashion, Style Tips

In this post, we’re featuring the FOLIO SUIT from Etcetera’s Fall Collection. The Folio Suit is made from a beautiful Turkish Herringbone fabric that packs nicely and transitions seasons beautifully. Here we’re highlighting Seven Ways to wear the FOLIO SUIT in Seven Days.

DAY 1 – THE COZY SWEATER

We’ve picked the MULTI sweater. This sweater has excellent versatility and can be worn several different ways; cowl neck, V-neck or reversed to a jewel neck. We’ve paired this cozy sweater with the FOLIO skirt. This micro herringbone twill skirt has comfortable two-way stretch and a svelte shape and a no-waist style that puts a modern spin on tradition. To add some color to this outfit, bring in RED SQUARE. This sweater, just like MULTI, has a touch of cashmere and can be worn three ways.

DAY 2- THE EXECUTIVE SUITE

We’re pulling the FOLIO SUIT together for your day in the office executive look that is also perfect for your evening event. The strapless bustier is a stretch micro herringbone just as the skirt mentioned above. This bustier takes power suiting to next-level versatility. Keep your jacket on in the office; no one will know until you remove the jacket for evening cocktails, dinner, or gala event. Pairing the bustier with the FOLIO pant that has a little drape and wider leg gives you that elegantly sexy jumpsuit look.

DAY 3 – SEPARATES

On day three we’re taking the Folio suit skirt and pairing it with other items in the collection. The jacket is KNIGHT, a textured tweed anorak in a subtle modern check with retro allure, luxurious leather trim, and piped seams. This jacket is unlined so it moves nicely from region to region and it also transitions season to season beautifully. Under KNIGHT we’ve put MAIDEN, a stretch cotton blouse that adds the polish of sateen and the corsair flash of lantern sleeves.

DAY 4 – ADD A TWEED BOMBER

Today we take the Folio Pant and add STORY, a bomber jacket style that’s been given an urbane update with luxe abstract boucle tweed and smooth ponte knit. We’ve layered NOBLE underneath STORY. NOBLE is a pullover turtleneck sweater, an indispensable layer for the season and remember each of the four turtlenecks in the collection has a matching pant, so you always have a column of color option. We’ve paired Noble and Story with the Folio pant, which has a Liz fit.

DAY 5 – THE FOLIO JACKET

As with all of the Folio pieces, the jacket is made from a micro herringbone that wears comfortably thanks to two-way stretch twill. The blazer is beautifully tailored and uniquely elegant. We’re pairing it with the ARRON blouse and the CAVIAR pant made from Japanese crepe. Arrone is a satin blouse with bias stripes, and loose, flowy cuffs that add a little extra savoir-faire. The Caviar pant adds instant elegance to this outfit. These full-length stretch crepe pants make every occasion special. The comfort and the look will put them at the top of your list of must-haves this season.

DAY 6 – COLOR

On day six we’re introducing Oxblood to the Folio suit with SOJOURN a luxe deep red suede jacket. This jacket has knit sleeves and back which gives the comfortable classic bomber a modern edge. We’ve layered Sojourn with Foley another pullover turtleneck.

DAY 7- SOMETHING NEW

We love sharing new trends with our clients, and on day seven we’re putting the Folio Bustier over the Maiden blouse and pairing them with CALVARY our skinny black ponte knit pant.

We always recommend having the clothes that you need for the occasions you have coming up. Experience tells us that spur of the moment generally doesn’t ever work out. Let us help you put your Seven Ways in Seven Days together with items from both your closet and the new fall collections. We’re showing Etcetera at the Lots of Luxe studio in Chapel Hill starting August 29. We’d love to see you there, work with you online or we can send you a Box of Luxe! Get in touch today!

Fall Transition: How to Wear Ankle Boots

August 15, 2018 Melrose Fisher Accessories, Fashion, Style Tips

The seasons are soon to be changing, and there is one versatile piece of footwear that is perfect for the transition into autumn. Ankle boots work perfectly for the in-between weather because they can be worn with dresses, pants and more. Ankle boots make the summer-to-fall wardrobe changeover stylishly seamless.

Ankle boots come in all different styles from block heels to wedges, to suede, snakeskin and more. You’ll find ankle boots that either fit tightly around your ankle or ones that have a wider opening. Some are stiletto or peep-toe. The length of ankle boots can vary too, from low on the ankle to higher up. Here’s a quick guide on how to wear your ankle boots.

First things first. What are the best styles to wear for your body type?

This is important because even though ankle boots are versatile, not every style looks great on every body.

Wide ankle, heeled ankle boots:

These look good on everyone! We all have different sized ankles, calves, and legs, but wide-ankle booties are best for everyone. Plus, heels elongate the body. Wear these with dresses, skirts, leggings, and so on.

Flat-heeled ankle boots:

Proceed with caution if you are short or have short legs. Flat heels offer no chance of elongating the legs and they also “cut-off” your legs wherever they sit on the ankle. Flat-heeled ankle boots look best with jeans (cuffed or not) on most people, but if you are tall, you can probably pull off wearing these with a dress or skirt.

High or low on the ankle?

Some booties sit below the ankle, and some rise above it. Lower ankle boots are a flattering choice because they sit low on the leg, creating an elongated look. Higher styles might not be the best choice if you are short, but choose the style that makes you feel your best!

Ankle boots with jeans

Any kind of ankle boots can be worn with a casual pair of blue jeans. There are a number of ways to wear ankle boots with jeans. The best fit for this look is a pair of jeans that fit mid-way down the ankle. This way, your jeans will sit either on top of or inside your boots, which is just a matter of personal choice. Jeans that are cropped too high or too long aren’t the most fabulous choice for ankle boots.

If you choose to wear skinny jeans, you can choose to roll up your jeans a bit at the ankle, or not. Roll up your jeans to create a small cuff right above your boots.

Pairing cowboy-inspired ankle boots with jeans is an ultra-casual look, or dress up your jeans with leather stiletto ankle boots.

Ankle boots with block heels

Any shoe with some height is just automatically dressier! The height of the ankle shaft and the height of the heel doesn’t matter here. Wearing high block-heeled booties with swing dresses, skirts, or shorts is an excellent choice to create the appearance of slimmer, longer legs. Lower block heels are much more of an everyday look with jeans or leggings.

Wedge ankle boots

These are a good choice while it’s still summertime. Wedges are perfect for dresses and shorts. As the temperature drops, pair wedge ankle boots with a skirt and tights or jeans.

Dressy options

The dressiest style of ankle boots is the pointed-toe stiletto. Leather or suede stiletto ankle boots can be worn for a more polished work or night-out look. Pair pointed-toe stiletto boots with a dress, skirt, or pants.

Undergarments Every Woman Should Own

August 8, 2018 Melrose Fisher Fashion, Style Tips

When we think about our wardrobes the last thing that comes to mind is undergarments, right? But in reality, what we wear under our clothes is just as important. We can think of undergarments like the foundation of any great outfit. Underthings can make you look shapelier and make your clothing look flawless. Let’s be honest, improperly fitting undergarments can make even the highest quality clothing look like a disaster. It’s what you wear underneath that counts.

A properly fitting bra is a girl’s best friend

According to some fashion gurus, 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. This type of information makes me want to set up an emergency press conference to get the word out. A properly fitting bra makes all the difference in the world. If your bra is too tight or even too loose, it can actually make you look bigger than you are. A bra that is too tight is unforgiving and can dig into your skin and create bulges. A loose fitting bra can slide or ride up your back. A bra that fits just right solves these problems. We usually treat our expensive, delicate lingerie with care and try to keep bras for as long as we can, but if you’ve been wearing the same bra after weight loss or weight gain, it’s time to get measured to make sure your bra fits.

Have your cups runneth over? Too small cups can have you spilling out of them. Most women who are wearing the wrong size bra are wearing a bra that is too small. Cup size is very important, but it has little to do with the size of your breasts. Your cup size is the difference between your breasts and your rib cage.

How is your band size working for you? Band size is very important! If your bra straps are digging into your shoulders, then your bra is not the right size. You might think that it’s the straps that are doing all the heavy lifting, but in fact, the band and straps do the lifting. If the straps need to be tightened to the point that they begin to dig into your shoulders, the band is not doing its job and may actually be too big. When the band fits properly there is no need to cinch the straps so tight. So, if you have straps that are too tight, try going down one band size. That’s right try taking the band size down one size and see if the straps then naturally fit because if the band of the bra is doing its job, you won’t have the painful digging of the straps. Not only is a bra that doesn’t fit right unsightly, but it is uncomfortable! Pain caused by ill-fitting bras is all too common.

A convertible bra

Ever pass up a great looking dress because you don’t have a bra to wear with it? It’s happened to all of us at one point. You decided against a dress with tiny straps, a sexy low-back dress, or a halter-neck top because you’d have to find the perfect bra to wear underneath it. Hard pass! One quick solution to all of those great one-shoulder tops and strapless dresses is a convertible bra. You never have to worry about having the right bra when you have a convertible bra. One bra with several uses is a practical wardrobe must-have. Simply switch up the straps to go strapless, one-shoulder, halter, and more. Many high-quality convertible bras come in a low-plunging neckline and/or have a low-back band to be extra versatile.

Ruby Ribbon V-Neck Full Slip

A full-body shaping slip

Instead of a traditional slip, shaping slips are meant to make your silhouette look shapely and flawless. A shaper will hide anything you want it to hide and will accentuate the rest. Instantly slim and shape with a full-body slip. The V-Neck Slip from Ruby Ribbon and all of the Ruby Ribbon Shapewear is made using a patented technical fabric, Intomi. Intomi provides 360 degrees of stretch for extreme comfort, shape, and sculpting making it the perfect undergarment for any dress or skirt. It provides lift and support so wearing a bra with this slip is not even necessary. The absolute best part about this shapewear is the invisible grip to keep the shapewear in place! The most irritating thing about shapewear is when it doesn’t stay in place. The point is to be comfortable and not have to run to the ladies room to tug your body shaper back into place! Instead, you’ll be able to have complete confidence in your comfort and style.

Nude Panty

Nude panties

Nothing kills the look of great-looking pants or skirts than underwear that is showing. Underwear should always be a no-show! Especially in the summer if you are wearing linen pants, thin fabrics, and light colors, then nude-colored underwear is a must. White underwear is not always in disguise! Choose a nude color instead when wearing light-colored bottoms.

Ruby Ribbon Shaping Brief

High-waisted panties

High-waisted underwear can be thought of as frumpy but to the contrary! Retro high-waisted underwear is great for everyday wear. The Ruby Ribbon Shaping Brief takes 1 inch off your waist. High-waisted underwear is great for a post-baby belly, and these shaping briefs will never show panty lines.

Ruby Ribbon Cami

A camisole with a built-in bra

Hello, comfort! A cami with a built-in bra works double time. First, you don’t need to wear a bra because the Original Full Support Cami by Ruby Ribbon has you covered. Second, lose 1 inch off your waist and create a smooth silhouette underneath any clothing. Super stretchy material smooths and compresses while giving your breasts a lift. You’ll definitely want to wear it every day!

How to be Photogenic

July 11, 2018 Melrose Fisher Style Tips

Some women are just naturally photogenic, and no matter how they look in person, pictures of them just happen to translate into flawlessness! How do they do it? For most of us, we struggle to like photos of ourselves. You leave the house feeling great, you spent your precious time perfecting your look and then a picture is snapped that catches all the wrong angles.

Remember when we could hide a picture in an old box and nobody would see a less than flattering photo? Well, now pictures are uploaded to social media within moments, and we’re stuck with the results. You can either un-tag yourself from your friends and family’s wedding, birthday, and special event photos or use these tips to learn how to become more photogenic.

Know your best facial angle

Most people have one side of their face that looks more flawless in photos. You can quickly determine which side is your best angle by looking at the right and left sides of your face in the mirror. If you have a dimple on your left cheek, that might be your best angle. Or maybe your nose looks more refined from the right side of your face. Whatever the case may be for you, most of us do not have a perfectly symmetrical face, so there will inevitably be one side you love more. Choose the angle that is best for you and work that angle!

  • Tip: To avoid a double chin, gently push your forehead towards the camera.

Angle your body

Never face the camera straight on. It’s best to always turn to the side and turn your head toward the camera. Facing straight will make you look wider than you are while turning to the side will automatically slim you. Think about how red carpet stars pose: turned to the side, arm on the hip, and face turned toward the camera.

  • Tip: Always keep your arms slightly away from your body, or put your hand on your hip to slim your arms.

Prepare for potential photo ops

It’s summer now, and weddings and events are in full swing. If you know, there will be pictures, prep your makeup to be prepared. Fill in your brows, choose a flattering lipstick (maybe a bit brighter than usual) or decide to wear a touch more makeup than you usually would. Avoid too light or too dark lipsticks and stick with bright colors, because they look the best in pictures. Dark lipstick can age you in photos, and light lipstick may not pair well with the bright flash of the camera. Simple extras like curled lashes, rosy blush, and a little extra eyeliner works really well in pictures. The camera can lighten your features, so defining your makeup will make you look great in photos.

  • Tip: Just be wary of too much shimmer-sparkly eyeshadow or highlighter can make you look too shiny.

Make a joke

Saying “cheese” never made anyone flash a natural smile. Forced smiles come across in pictures, either as insincere or wide-grinned. Make a joke or think of something that makes you smile so that the camera will capture your most natural, gorgeous smile.

  • Tip: When you smile naturally, your eyes will automatically squint a bit so you will avoid wide-eyed photos.

Small tweaks make a big difference

  • Beware the height of the camera. Never take a picture with the camera below you. The camera should ideally be above you.
  • If you tend to blink in pictures, close your eyes and open them right before camera clicks so your eyes will always be open.
  • Avoid scattered prints and horizontal stripes if you don’t want to look fuller in photos.

Weddings, special occasion events, and family reunions all require that you think about what you’re going to be wearing in advance. We’re here to make life easier when it comes to having just the right pieces in your wardrobe. We can help by working with what you have in your closet currently and of course, we can help you shop for something new. Our goal is to never just sell you clothes but to save you both time and money while helping you establish a wardrobe that works.

3 Tips on How to Bare Arms this Summer

May 24, 2018 Melrose Fisher Accessories, Fashion, Style Tips

If you’re like me and others of a certain age, wearing sleeveless is getting to be more difficult with each passing day. And living in the South where the summers can be unbearable further complicates the issue for wearing sleeveless.

In this week’s post, I’m sharing a few tips to help you wear those sleeveless pieces to play up your style while taking the focus off of your arms.

You’ll be happy to know that the season’s trend toward all things transparent and sheer will be one of your best options when styling sleeveless tops.

1. Lightweight Cardigans or Jackets with Sheer Bodices or Sleeves

Both Carlisle and Etcetera collections have lots of sheer pieces that allow you to wear sleeveless without overheating or diminishing the beauty of your garment.

BERKELEY Carlisle Style #505791

This transparent jacket is lovely and described as having an abstract open weave stripe. Essential layering that is relaxed and polished and covers your arms.

MOROCCO Carlisle Style #305884

This ultralight summer topper is so versatile. It works as well layered over a dress as it does over pants. Spun from a soft cotton blend, this long-line silhouette has a chic geometric design in an elegant palette.

DANIELLE Carlisle Style #310860

Extremely sheer and gorgeous.

Organza wrap trench coat from Carlisle Summer 2017BELLEFLOWER Carlisle Style #105586 | ELIZA Style #105779

This single-breasted wrap trench coat is light and airy and crafted from delicate organza.

FLINT Etcetera Style #410587

This knit bomber from Etcetera has integrally-knit sheer and opaque stripes for chic textures. It’s so adorable, too!

2. Wear a cropped sweater, bolero or shrug.

Wearing a cropped sweater, bolero or shrug can be just the thing to cover up. Remember, a bolero is best on women with a regular or long torso. Boleros and even shrugs are not your best friend if you’re short-waisted. A bolero could work for you if it is the same color as the top you’re wearing; making the bolero look longer.

NOVA Carlisle Style #110617

This long sleeve shrug has a cute scallop trim and will not only finish your look in style but cover your arms beautifully.

CROCHET Etcetera Style #210839

White cotton crochet adds texture in this summer’s must-have cropped cardigan sweater from Etcetera.

3. Drape a pashmina, wrap, or scarf over those sleeveless arms.

Just a few ways to wear your pashmina, wrap or scarf.

GABY Carlisle Style #117598

Add a soft touch around your shoulders with this tonal paisley printed Italian silk twill scarf.

FRESHCUT Carlisle Style #117867

This beautiful summer scarf will bring an instant touch of feminine luxury to your outfit and cover those arms. Crafted from the finest silk twill, this piece is printed with a trend-right folkloric floral.

LYRICAL Carlisle Style #117877

And finally, keep this silk chiffon sling handy for instant chic, dressing up any summer look with incomparable detail while at the same time covering your arms. The luxurious texture, perfect weight, and fantastic Antibes print make it the ideal travel companion, too.

How to Wear Prints & Patterns

April 25, 2018 Melrose Fisher Fashion, Style Tips

Spring and summer fashion brought numerous prints and patterns. You may be overlooking their beauty and creativity or dismissing them as too complicated to wear. Let’s address the artistry in patterns first.

An artist designed every pattern or print you see in clothing. He or she manipulates color, scale, and repetition as they design the fabrics that will be made into garments. Those artists may be influenced by history, nature, architecture, the art world, or other cultures.

CATTLEYA Carlisle Style #117817

Add the perfect feminine touch to outfits with a long silk scarf in a Japanese-inspired Cattleya orchid print for understated glamour.

As a consumer of fashion, you get to adorn yourself in a print that suits your personality or sensibility. There are so many to choose from; you really can find one that resonates with you.

Some people hesitate wearing prints because it seems difficult or mysterious. Yet wearing them can be so pleasing to you. Let us answer a few questions about prints so you can start wearing them with confidence. We’ll also show you some prints and patterns that you’ll find in the spring/summer Carlisle & Etcetera collections (scroll down).

How would I begin to choose one pattern to wear when there are so many to choose from?

If you have coffee table books at home, you’ve already got a great resource for figuring out what you love and then spotting it in a print. They could be on any topic such as modern art, country or cottage living, art history, specific decades like the 1930s, 40s, 50s or 60s, flowers, gardens from around the world, pop art, etc.

Sit down and study the pages of your coffee table books. Let the images soak in. When you go shopping next, you’ll be quick to notice prints that represent an interest of yours. Pick some out and try them on. There’s a lot of pleasure in wearing something that already has meaning to you.

The spring and summer collections, both Carlisle and Etcetera are full of lovely patterns, from floral to stripes and paisley to checks. A great way to determine a pattern or print that suits you is to come by the studio and try them on; we’ll help you decide.

POSY Carlisle Style #115930

Pique cotton-blend midi dress has a box pleat hem for a flared shape, exquisite garden print for head-turning style. It will make any event memorable with vines of morning glory daylilies, freesia, and enchanting hummingbirds. Breathtaking and loads of fun!

SITGES Carlisle Style #514831

Stretch cotton pencil skirt whittles away the silhouette with a geometric print in contrasting vertical and horizontal panels. Easy to wear, too, with a deep back vent.

OAHU Etcetera Sylte #215881

This satin maxi dress will dominate summer with its mesmerizing paisley print in tropical colors and the unique contrast border.

CHESS Etcetera Style #215863

This easy summer sheath dress has elegant chain link check, colorblock detailing, dot lace and fringe trim. A fun way to mix the same pattern.

Can petites, or those of a shorter stature, wear large patterns?

Traditionally it’s been said that petite or women that are shorter in stature, should wear small prints. We disagree with that. Clothing always has to be in the right proportion but within that proportion can exist a patterned skirt or top that is larger scale if the woman has large-scale features (eyes, nose, mouth), a  booming personality, or is a rule-breaker by nature.

Is there a bold print for everyone?

Not necessarily. However, we have had clients who never thought that they could wear a bold print and then when we had them try some on, they absolutely fell in love with the look. So be adventurous. You may think you know what will work best but prepare to be surprised.

How do I wear two different stripes in the same outfit?

The scale of the stripes should be a bit different in each garment. The outfit below is a perfect example of how mixing stripes can work beautifully. The amount of the white space and the tiny pink stripe in the pant adds to why this pairing looks so amazing.

HEIRESS Carlisle Cardigan Style #310845 | HEIRESS Shell Style # 310846 | AMALFI Pant Style #309836

Cool your look with a cardigan sweater with variegated vertical stripes in a lovely shade of zinnia pink. Although perfect alone, you can also layer it over the matching sweater tank like we’ve done here. The AMALFI pant is made from a beautiful fabric that fits the body perfectly. Soft and drapey, this tapered-leg must-have is woven in Carlisle’s trademark windowpane plaid pattern with the tiniest pink stripe.

How do I choose the right leopard print?

Start with the color. You may already know whether it’s more flattering for you to wear cool colors or warm colors. With that knowledge as your guide, look for a leopard print that follows the same formula. A leopard print could be in shades of gray and black, which would be great for someone with cooler coloring. A leopard print in camel and chocolate brown would better serve someone with warm coloring.

SERENGETI Etcetera Style #215566

Take a walk on the wild side with this animal printed sueded lyocell shirtdress. Worn as a topper or a dress makes it so versatile

Can I mix a floral print with a plaid?

Yes, but be sure they share one color in common. When both prints share a shade of blue, that blue is the glue that makes them pair well together. Perhaps there’s a yellow-green in a floral print and a darker yellow-green in a plaid. Even though the yellow-greens aren’t matching, it’s close enough to make it work.

What do I do to keep prints from looking too busy?

Add an accessory in a bold color like a bold gold necklace or stack of solid colored bangles to give the eye something to look at besides the pattern. Another thing that works when wearing two garments in different prints is to add a belt. A thin or wide belt separating prints helps ground your outfit.

GRAND PRIX Etcetera Style #215900 | DYNAMO Style #205859

Break up a print or pattern with a solid color jacket as you see above where the DYNAMO cropped stretch linen jacket in tulip red is the perfect focal point for GRAND PRIX. Grand Prix is a sweater knit sheath dress with rich stripes of varied textures, plus open pointelle for breezy comfort.

UNCHARTED Ecetera Style #215910

Uncharted is a reverse matelassé bustier dress with optional straps for chic summer evenings. The jacquard of oversize hibiscus and camellias are a soft and subtle pattern.

WAIKIKI Etcetera Style #215890

This knit gored dress is in a brilliant tropical print. The mesh inset neck, Ottoman rib details, and a banded jacquard empire waist has already quieted down the floral pattern for you. No alternate focal point is necessary with this dress; it’s built in.

Can someone who is shy mix patterns?

Absolutely! Wear prints that have plenty of white space or black space. A cluttered print may be way too busy for you. Look for patterns that are subtler. But do remember to mix the scale of the prints. You still need one to be larger than the other. You can make many lovely, sophisticated mixes focusing on a soft palette rather than a bright one.

EDELWEISS Carlisle Style #115590

Feminine and flirty, this floral jacquard knit dress sports an A-line skirt and a chic pastel color scheme that is subtle and soft.

MAGNOLIAS Etcetera Style #209786

Soft, subtle florals infuse these stretch cotton twill garment-washed jeans with super stretch for an unparalleled fit.

Why bother mixing prints and patterns?

It’s a way to really own your look. You won’t find anyone looking like you. Also, it’s a way to be artistic without paints, canvases, and sketches! You’ve taken the artistry provided by the creators of these patterns to the next level where you then create your own individual art through the magic of your combinations.

We highly encourage you to make friends with prints and patterns this season. They really can bring you so much joy. We’d love to help you collect a handful of prints that truly work for you. We’re just a phone call away!

Below are several more prints and patterns you’ll find in the Carlisle and Etcetera Spring & Summer Collections.

REEF Carlisle Style #509874

The watercolor print trend is making waves everywhere and is just right for the season. This abstract geometric/floral version transforms a luxurious silk double georgette jogger into a work of art.

CORFU Carlisle Style #114933 | Style #112933

These pieces are made from boldly colorful geometric and floral rows of lace, and they have a breezy retro resort feel.

SEAPORT Etcetera Style #215588

Here we have subtle tone-on-tone floral and animal print patterns combined to create a look that’s exciting yet classic on this jacquard knit dress that also sports a mix of lace. The mixing and matching of patterns and textures are already done for you.

VINES Etcetera Skirt Style #214511 | ADA Blouse Style #212796

Dresses for Every Figure

April 4, 2018 Melrose Fisher Fashion, Style Tips

Any body type is beautiful, all you need is to choose the right styles for your figure! Wearing flattering dresses for your body type instantly highlights all of the places you want to show off while masking any areas you’d like to keep a secret. The key to being effortlessly stunning in your 40s and beyond is simply to dress for your shape. Here is your definitive guide to picking the perfect dress for your body shape.

The Carlisle and ETCETERA spring and summer collections are full of dresses for every shape.

Hourglass/Curvy Figure

If your hips and bust measurements are roughly the same, and you have a narrow waist, then this fits your description. The key to dressing an hourglass shape is to accentuate the waist. Embrace your curves and celebrate your waist with styles that flatter your figure. Belted dresses and wrap dresses are the curvy woman’s best friends. Any style that cinches at the waist is a great choice to highlight your curvy silhouette. Fit and flare dresses were also made for you! When in doubt, an empire-waist is a good choice for your curvy shape. Don’t be afraid of fitted styles! Structured, tailored styles that hug your figure will show off your curves. Pencil skirts are a classic look for the curvy woman. When it comes to sleeve lengths, elbow length sleeves are best for you, because they draw attention to your waist. Any and all hemlines suit you, so choose the one that makes you feel most beautiful. your shape is very balanced, so as long as you draw attention to your waist, you will always look very well put together.

ETCETERA ROMP Style #215864

Update your summer wardrobe with the season’s most comfortable romper. A soft, drapey striped style, it has a long, detachable skirt you might add on for evening wear. We’re suggesting you put these pieces together for that perfect “dress” for your perfect curvey shape.

ETCETERA WAIKIKI Style #215890

Knit gored dress in a brilliant tropical print with mesh inset neck, Ottoman rib details, and a banded jacquard empire waist.

CARLISLE BLOOM Style #115591

This classic dress has a floral bloom print that brings the romance. A full pleated skirt with 3 deep box pleats from hips to hem and a feminine jewel neck adds to the sophisticated look. Notice the placement of the bloom print and how it beautifully accentuates the waist.

Triangle Figure

This is also known as the pear shape, but for the sake of women everywhere, we are going to move away from those fruit labels! This body shape features narrower shoulders and bust. If your waist is wider than your bust and you have full hips, then this is your figure shape. To dress for your figure, try highlighting your neckline, shoulders, and waist! Draw attention upwards to elongate your figure. Dresses with V-neck and scoop necklines look great on you! You have tons of options: Try dresses with dramatic sleeves, backless options, fancy necklines, and belted dresses. Also, try A-line dresses, they will make your hips and thighs look trim while emphasizing your upper body.

CARLISLE HADLEY Style #315532

With chic bell sleeves, this sweater dress is ideal for work or date night.

ETCETERA BARBADOS Style #215866

Add a touch of refreshing tropical green to any occasion. Our shift is a rich abstract jacquard, with flattering seams and angled pockets.

ETCETERA HARLOW Style #215591

Pointelle accents, a touch of lacing, and a chic fit and flare silhouette all help this sophisticated dress stand out on your beautiful figure.

Inverted Triangle Figure

Your shape is well-proportioned with shoulders that are wider than your hips and your waist is less defined. Find dresses that don’t showcase the waist. For example, flowy dresses are perfect for your shape. Sheath and shift dresses look great on you. If you like strapless looks, then you’re in luck because you can wear strapless looks and be flawless. As far as hemlines, knee-length is your best bet. Choose dresses in dark colors and diagonal stripes, they are most flattering for you.

ETCETERA DECK Style #215548

With a 60’s retro inspiration, this sheath dress will add a flirty touch to any occasion.

CARLISLE BLUEMARINE Style #315500

Polished and perfect, this stretch double crepe sheath dress sports peekaboo details for a twist on a classic sheath dress.

Athletic Figure

You may have been referring to it as “boyish frame” but again, let’s not do that ladies! Your figure is strong! Your shoulder and hip measurements are similar, and you have a less defined waistline. Your weight is very evenly distributed throughout your body. Dresses for you include strapless styles, halters, and scoop-necklines. You can choose to play up any part of your body: if you love your legs, then shorter dresses and skirts can work for you, if you love your bust, then choose strapless or plunging necklines. You can choose to accentuate your waist with belted styles or A-line dresses.

CARLISLE CHELSEA PINK Style #115570

Take a vibrant approach in this must-have classic dress in satin back silk marocain. The deep V-neck detail adds feminine appeal, flattering the silhouette.

ETCETERA INEZ Style #215909

Elegant evenings begin with the right dress and the right dress for your figure. This fit and flare style has rich jacquard texture and a luxurious metallic sheen that elevates the mood. Those with a curvey figure are going to love INEZ, too.

ETCETERA OAHU Style #215881

The satin maxi dress will dominate summer with its mesmerizing paisley print in tropical colors and the unique contrast border.

Short Stature Figure

If you are under 5’4″ choose the shape that describes you best from above. Here are a few tips for what kind of dresses to choose: Monochrome looks, meaning one or two colors are great for your shorter frame. Don’t wear a lot of layers; they will look bulky on a tiny figure. Dresses with vertical stripes create the illusion of a taller figure.

CARLISLE CAPETOWN Style #115732

Sleek, chic, and utterly perfect, this solid crepe sheath dress is an ultimate classic.

CARLISLE DELPHI Style #315927

Bias stripes are a defining theme with contrasting diagonal patterns through the middle that make the profile look fabulous. A soft stretch cotton blend ensures daylong comfort and an attractive fit.

ETCETERA HAYWORTH Style #215901

A pure cotton sheath dress in a slimming black and white pattern is a smart option for summer wear.

Be an Accessories Pro with These Ten Tips

March 7, 2018 Melrose Fisher Accessories, Style Tips

Accessories have the potential to bring so much flavor to an outfit. Well-chosen accessories help you accentuate your style and bring you confidence. These ten tips will help you be an accessory wiz in no time!

1. Use your accessories to punctuate your style. For example, look at the finishes on jewelry pieces. A textured matte finish is more organic and earthy. A smooth, shiny finish is more sophisticated and traditional. If your style is more eclectic, you may want to wear shiny and matte finishes together.

2. Use color in small or large doses. One bold-colored bangle mixed with two black or two white ones adds a hint of drama to an outfit. An arm filled with brightly colored bangle is fully committed to drama. Check out this YouTube video tutorial  How To: Layer Bracelets.

3. A closet may indeed hold too many pairs of black pants. Rather than investing in yet another pair, consider expanding your accessory wardrobe instead. Those additions will make it seem like you have a brand new wardrobe.

4. When you buy a new outfit think about what kind of accessories you’ll need to “finish” the outfit. When you neglect that step, you may end up weeks from now with those clothes in your closet with the price tags still hanging on them.

5. Accessories are a way to expand a wardrobe of solids. Necklaces are great accents over solid-colored T-shirts, sweaters, or tops. Layer multiple necklaces for more style emphasis. Check out this YouTube video, another by Kagi Jewelry
How to Layer Necklaces.

6. If you mix patterns and prints in the same outfit, you may choose to wear fewer pieces of jewelry. Your clothing may be bringing all the interest you need. In that case, focus on your earrings, rings, or chains to add minimal layering to what’s already going on.

7. Boho earrings look great with boho dresses. Traditional jewelry looks great with traditionally cut blouses and trousers. Unless you’re very artistic and borrow from multiple styles to create a visual masterpiece, let your clothing style help you dictate the style of accessories you’ll wear with them.

8. Department stores may not offer the selection you need to own accessories that resonate with you. Try other sources such as off-price stores TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. Consider shopping consignment stores or estate sales. Walk the aisles of a gem show, antique fair, or art show. If you find something you love, think through how many outfits you could wear it with. If you’re up to five outfits, you’ll be purchasing something of value. If it can only be worn with one thing you own, consider whether it’s an investment you want to make at this time.

9. Like clothing, accessories need to be edited. Sort through your collection and gift, consign, or donate the pieces that really don’t interest you anymore.

10. Accessories can be altered or redesigned. If you have a necklace that’s too long, have it shortened. If a necklace is too short, add an extender. If the closure is too hard to manage, take your necklace to a jeweler and see if they can change it to a magnetic closure. Necklaces that have too many things hanging from it could be made to look more current by removing parts of it. Don’t be afraid to make changes yourself or take them to someone who can. You could get much more life out of something you already own but aren’t wearing.

Is it time for you to address your accessories?  We’re here to help! Whether it’s editing what you already have or shopping for accessories to finish outfits you own, we can be of service. Just give your Personal Stylist a call!
