Where and How to Get Rid of Your Luxury Items

February 1, 2022 Lots of Luxe Fashion Tips, Household

When a year ends and a brand new one starts, there is something in the air that makes us want to start fresh in all areas of life. It’s all about releasing the old and beginning anew. One of my favorite places to purge the old is my wardrobe, and I know many of my clients agree!

If you have clothes or accessories that no longer fit or just don’t appeal to you anymore, it’s a good time to release them. Some unwanted clothing can be donated, but what can we do with luxury items that have a higher value? A good option is to sell the items and get back some of your investment (if only to put it towards new items!)

So, where can you sell used luxury items? Glad you asked! Let’s go over a few great options for selling designer items. The good news is, you have plenty of convenient choices.

1.   Take luxury items to a consignment shop near you

Typically, most consignment shops require an appointment before you bring in belongings. Some shops are pickier than others and don’t accept everything you bring in. However, if you have high-end goods, the odds are they will accept them if they are in good condition. Consignment shops will offer you a percentage of the sale when an item sells, often 50/50. The only effort you pay is dropping off the items, which is easy enough. Be sure to understand the store’s contract, so you know what to expect. If your items don’t sell, some shops allow you to take them back.

2.   Try out resale stores

If you don’t want to wait to get cash with consigning, you can try taking high-end clothing, shoes, or accessories to resale shops instead. Here’s how it works: You bring your clothing and you will receive cash up front, which is different from traditional consignment stores. There is a sense of convenience here because you will leave with cash without waiting or risking the shop not selling your things. Another perk of resale stores is that they aren’t seasonal. Many consignment shops will take what’s in season right now, which might leave you with items you wanted to get rid of. Generally, these stores don’t require an appointment either, but each one will operate differently.

3.   Online resellers are a popular choice

Here is an option if you want control over the items you are selling. However, it does come with more work. Generally, online selling requires you to take pictures of your items along with detailed descriptions so buyers know what they are getting. You may have to interact with buyers to answer questions or concerns. These websites safely process transactions and cash will become available to you once the buyer has approved of your items.

There are both upsides and downsides to these online used clothing shops. The upsides include control of your items, pricing, and a plethora of buyers. However, online options can be more time-consuming. The time it takes to list items and ship them can be a turnoff to some.  There is also a bargaining culture that you may come across if buyers are looking for a cheaper price. Lastly, many websites will take a cut of your sales, depending on the platform, but this is similar to consigning.

Some popular reselling websites are ThredUp, Poshmark, Vinted, and The RealReal. Sites like ThredUp are less time-consuming because you can just send out your designer clothing and be done with the process, but keep in mind your payout will be lower. TheRealReal is similar to a high-end consignment shop but will require a bit more effort. One positive about online used clothing shops is that you will have potentially millions of eyes on your unwanted items. You may be able to easily sell things as there are tons of buyers looking for designer clothing at a discount.

Also, keep in mind that this can take time and you might want to update your items regularly to make sure to push them to the top of people’s feeds. You want your listings to be boosted and seen in buyers’ search results.

What’s in Your Handbag Collection

November 2, 2021 Lots of Luxe Accessories, Fashion Tips

If you want to update or improve your handbag collection, you’ve landed in the right place! Every handbag collection should have something for each of your needs; even the minimalists have several bags, one (or more) for each occasion.

Let’s explore the different kinds of bags you’ll need in your wardrobe — everything from functional and practical to luxurious … and maybe a tad over-the-top.

 The “Everyday” Bag

You’ll definitely need that go-to bag that you love to carry for its functionality and neutrality. The elements of a great everyday bag vary because you’ll need to tailor it to exactly what you need! Some women like to carry a small bag with essentials that effortlessly match their typical outfits, and other women need a large bag that can hold a laptop and whatever you’ll need for a busy day.

So, consider your daily needs when choosing an everyday bag. In any case, I have some recommendations.

Choose a durable bag — this bag needs to stand the test of time! As the handbag you’ll carry most often, choose quality.  Personally, I look for handbags with feet on the bottom for added protection.

Find the right size — find a size that will allow you to bring what you need but will also be proportional to your size. You want the width, height, and depth of your handbag to be relative to your height, bone structure, and body shape. You don’t want a bag that overwhelms you or one so small it goes into hiding.

Shoulder straps or Not – if you like shoulder bags, make sure the straps are adjustable or the straps are a length that allows the bag to hit you at the right location on your side. Once again, it is about proportions. Not only do you want your sleeve length and hems to be proportional to your body, you want your handbag to also follow the rules of proportion.

Keep it versatile — this bag needs to match most of your day-to-day outfits.

Finding that “Everyday” bag keeps you from having to “change it out” frequently; therefore, keeping panic attics from occurring.  Have you ever changed purses only to find out when you arrived at work or a meeting, you forgot to transfer your wallet, or lipstick?

 The Little Black Bag

Just like its counterpart — the little black dress — the little black bag is reliable, timeless, chic, and oh so necessary. Finding a little black bag is adding a classic to your wardrobe that never goes out of style. You’ll likely have this bag (or multiple versions of a LBB) for years to come. Make sure it’s versatile and the right size for your needs.

 The Tote

Everyone needs at least one tote! These bags are not only utilitarian, but they can look absolutely polished and professional, too. It’s wonderful to have a super roomy bag that can handle anything. If you are going to work, running errands, hopping on an airplane, or just heading to yoga, you’ll love having a practical bag that looks great too. Usually, totes are open tops, but you might prefer zip tops, which you can also find.

 The Wristlet/Wallet on a Chain

When you want to carry as little as possible, grab a wristlet or a wallet on a chain. Having both of these options in your wardrobe is ideal! A wallet on a chain is just enough to carry cards and other wallet essentials, with a chain for a bit more pizazz if you want a more elegant look. Or, for something less dressy, a wristlet is the perfect little carrying case for essentials. Wristlets come in all shapes and sizes, from casual to professional.

 The Crossbody

Hands-free all day? Crossbody bags are convenient, stylish, and carefree. While out shopping or running errands, one less thing to carry is just what we need! Crossbody bags can also be your everyday bag, depending on what you need. This bag should be versatile and durable.

 The Belt Bag

Hands-free, but make it super trendy! Belt bags have been big in the last couple of years, and they’re on the 2022 runways. Belt bags are usually pretty small, just enough to carry a few essentials – ie. Phone, lipstick, credit card/license. Perfect for commuting or running errands, belt bags allow you to carry what you need while looking put together and having both hands free.

 The Structured Bag

No accessory says “polished,” quite like a structured bag. A structured bag can instantly transform your look if you dress up, making it even chicer and put-together. Structured top handles are sophisticated and pull together a professional outfit or transform a casual outfit into a more ladylike and refined look.

 The Clutch/Evening Bag

An evening bag is a wardrobe essential, although it’s probably the least used out of the bunch. There will always come a time when you need an evening bag for vacation, a wedding, or any event where you will be inclined to dress up, so it’s nice to have a few on hand. It’s a good idea to choose evening bags that will be neutral and paired with multiple outfits. Although most evening bags come in colors like black, champagne, or cream, you can always find a flashy one if that’s what dazzles you! If the clutch has a chain that you can convert to a shoulder bag, then you’ve got two for one

Which Shoes Are Right for You? A Guide to Feeling Confident and Comfortable in Your Shoes

September 1, 2021 Lots of Luxe Fashion Tips, Shoes

Women appreciate good footwear — shoes that make us feel good and look good. When you wear shoes that make you feel good, you know it — and everyone notices! The right shoes can even make an impact on the impression you make. Footwear can also completely change the mood of an outfit, not to mention lift our spirits.

Shoes can be practical, extravagant, eye-catching, outrageous, comfortable, make a statement, or literally just carry you through your day.

Want to know how to find shoes that flatter your body type? Here’s a quick guide for that.

Above all else, just know that you can choose to wear whatever you love and feel comfortable in — regardless of your body type!

Short and slim:

If your legs are short and thin, shoes with height are a great choice for you. Platforms, heels, and wedges all flatter you. If you want to make your legs appear longer, opt for shoes without straps at the ankle, which can create the illusion of shorter legs.

If heels aren’t your thing, but you want to make your legs look longer, you can choose skirts or dresses with high hemlines, giving you the appearance of longer legs while you wear comfy ballerina flats.

Short:

If you’re short, don’t fret, it’s easy to find shoes that flatter you. Simple heels are best!  Choose bright statement shoes or prints that draw eyes downwards. Other choices include open-toed shoes or below-the-knee boots. Less flattering looks for short women include shoes that wrap around your ankle. Many fashion magazines will say that wearing flats will make your legs look even shorter, but if you want to wear flats, you should! Choose comfort and happiness first.

Tall and thin:

Now, on the flip side, forget the myth that tall women shouldn’t wear heels. Long, slim legs are flattered by heels, too. If you don’t want any extra height, choose flats, strappy sandals, or mid-calf stretchy boots are good choices. You could avoid pointy shoes or chunky platforms if you want to choose a more flattering option for your body.

Tall and muscular:

If your goal is to elongate your legs, wear heels, especially pointy, open-toed shoes. Wedge sandals with a 2–3-inch heel are another option.

Muscular women often have a hard time finding tall boots that fit over their calves, but you might find wide-calf boots with side zippers. Also, finding boots with a bit of slouch can give you some extra room. The least flattering shoes for you are rounded toe pumps, kitten heels, or small squared heels.

Universally flattering:

Stilettos. All women look great in stilettos, regardless of body type! Wear them if you love them, leave them if you don’t.

Are Your Clothes Making you Look Bigger?

May 18, 2021 Lots of Luxe Fashion Tips, Proper Fit

Tips & Tricks to Strategically Camouflage Flaws While Flaunting Your Best Assets

Want to learn the tips and tricks to accentuate your best assets and camouflage your flaws? The answer often lies with the clothes you choose.

Every woman’s body is unique. With that said, we all have our favorite and least favorite parts of our bodies. For confidence’s sake, we can learn exactly how to showcase the features of our bodies that we love and hide anything that we’d rather not. As always, it’s not about hating those parts we’d love to change but simply embracing them and accentuating the positives.

You may be wearing clothes that make you look bigger, hide your silhouette, or mask your favorite features. The great news is that we can slim down or make our bodies look fabulous within a matter of minutes with the right outfit.

Here are the top culprits for not looking your best.

Ill-Fitting Undergarments

Your bra, underwear, and shapewear are your foundation for looking good. If they don’t fit right (either too big or too small), even perfectly fitting clothes won’t look flattering. Too tight bras can cause bulges. Improperly fitting underwear can produce panty lines that make your rear look unfavorable. If shapewear doesn’t fit correctly, its purpose is no longer to your advantage. Always make sure you have the proper fit when it comes to undergarments. Getting professional fittings is a must to allow your best silhouette to shine through. What’s more, having underwear that fits right is just more comfortable!

Too Tight Clothes

This one is a given but let me elaborate. Often, tight-fitting clothes are fashionable, so we choose them based on their trendiness (read: skinny jeans). But we should be selecting clothes based on how good they make us feel and look rather than following the trends.

Clothes that are too tight can make us look larger. If you find yourself squeezing into anything, re-think it! Always choose clothes that fit you comfortably, even if it means going up a size. When you wear clothes that fit well, you won’t have to worry about unflattering angles.

Oversized Garments

On the flip side, wearing that oversized t-shirt, tunic, or jersey-style shirt with leggings is not doing your figure any favors. We probably feel more comfortable in large clothing, but if you want to flatter your figure, this is not the way to do it. This rule also applies to puffer jackets, chunky sweaters, and other pieces of clothing that add volume. If you want to look smaller, focus on well-fitting garments. If the sole goal is comfort, by all means, wear the oversized shirt!

Prints and Patterns

You’ve probably heard wearing horizontal stripes adds width to your figure. But what about other patterns? Many other prints can indeed add dimension and can create the illusion of a bulkier body. The two biggest culprits that make bodies noticeably fuller are large prints and horizontal stripes. If you love either of these prints, feel free to wear them, regardless. But if you are consciously trying to appear smaller, they are not your friend. Instead, try vertical stripes or small prints.

Chunky Footwear

Maybe you haven’t thought about how specific shoes can be unflattering to your figure, but it’s true. If you want to create the illusion of longer, slimmer legs, opt for sleeker, thinner, pointed-toe shoes. Wearing clunky heels and platforms adds more bottom heaviness and can make the legs appear shorter.

Need a Second Opinion?

If clothing fit is the last thing you have time for, you are not alone. Many women desire to look better, but their wishes fall to the wayside while taking care of everyone else. Finding a tailor, personal stylist, or wardrobe consultant takes the time and guesswork out of it so you can look your best while living your busy life.

Sometimes the best way to make sure your outfits are complementary to your figure is to ask a professional. Getting an unbiased, qualified expert to help you figure out what will make you look slimmer and chicer is just the ticket.

I’m here if you need me! Melrose

Ask Your Personal Stylist: How do I wear high-waisted pants?

March 16, 2021 Lots of Luxe Fashion, Fashion Tips

You’ve asked, I’m answering! High-waisted pants are incredibly comfortable — and stylish. Here’s how to wear them to flatter your body.

In the battle between high-waisted pants and low-rise pants, high-waisted pants are (thankfully) plentiful this year! Women tend to love high-waisted pants for their versatility, comfort, and their tendency to flatter figures.

This season, Carlisle and Etcetera are featuring several styles of high-waisted bottoms. Before you browse, read on to find out how to choose the perfect style and make these functional pants work for your lifestyle.

Who Can Wear High-Waisted Pants?

Most everyone can so give them a shot! High-waisted pants are universally flattering, so no matter what body shape you have, you can find a high-waisted pair of pants or jeans that look great on you. High-waisted pants disguise love handles and never create a muffin top, unlike low-rise denim that can leave you feeling less covered up. It is any wonder that high-waisted pants are in high demand this season?

Denim is always a staple, and it’s good to have several styles in your wardrobe. While many of us are living in leisurewear, why not trade in sweatpants for comfortable and figure-flattering high-waisted jeans?

High-waisted pants are a go-to look all year. By giving you a well-balanced and flattering silhouette, they will quickly become your new favorite pants for everyday wear.

How Can I Wear High-Waisted Pants?

First, you’ll want to wear your high-waisted pants nearest your natural waistline, at the narrowest part of your midriff. This will ensure a flattering fit. Second, ensure a proper hem length for your body. If you choose straight or flared high-waisted pants, look for hemlines that reach down to your toes. If you choose skinny high-waisted pants, the hem should sit right at the ankles.

High-waisted pants look best with a tucked-in top to not only show off the high-waisted style but to flatter your figure as well. Nearly any type of top will work well with high-waisted pants, with a few exceptions. Button-down blouses, long-sleeve tops, or tanks, basic t-shirts can be tucked into your high-waisted pants.

High-waisted pants come in a variety of styles from boyfriend jeans to tailored skinny pants. Some variations include wide-leg, straight-leg, or flares. Wearing high-waisted pants can go from laidback and comfortable at home to a chic going out look.

You can take your pick of heels, boots, sneakers, or sandals with your high-waisted pants. These pants are versatile enough to be paired with any kind of footwear.

What to Avoid

Overly frilly, blousy tops can be unflattering with high-waisted pants. Too much fabric can weigh you down or be too bulky and you’ll risk masking your shape. With the extra fabric of high-waisted pants, stick to more form-fitting tops that are easily tucked in or knotted to the side.

Bulky, short jackets are also not likely to flatter when wearing high-waisted pants, as they can create a boxy look by making the waist appear wider. What’s more, wearing high-waisted pants can help you achieve an hourglass silhouette, which will be hidden with a jacket that’s too big.

Melrose’s Favorite Picks

How to Wear a White Shirt

December 23, 2020 Lots of Luxe Fashion Tips

Create Dozens of Outfits with this Versatile Closet Essential

Let’s talk about one of the greatest wardrobe-essentials. A classic, chic piece that every woman needs (at least one of) in her wardrobe. Perhaps the most versatile article of clothing you could own.

The white shirt.

A white shirt can go from jeans and sneaker pairings while running errands to a stylish night out when paired with black leather pants and heels. The same crisp white shirt can be paired with work pants or casual denim. White shirts can truly adapt in any situation, so I have to say that I recommend every woman has at least one white shirt she loves, if not more!

Here’s how to rock this wardrobe staple at work, date night, and beyond.

How to Wear a White Shirt For Work

I can’t begin these work outfit suggestions without noting a crisp white button-down and a blazer is endlessly chic and always in style.

For work, wear a white shirt with a pants suit, a blazer, and jeans, or with a pencil or a pleated skirt. Wearing a white shirt that peeks out from a sweater or vest is also clean-cut and classic. Collared white shirts are perfect for work, but of course, several styles can easily be worn in a professional setting. White shirts are classic, go with truly anything, and look immediately professional. The greatest thing is, if you buy white shirts for the office, they can work no matter the season. You’ll have a tried and true staple for creating polished work outfits.

Add polished accessories to complete your look.

How to Wear a White Shirt For a Night Out

The chameleon of clothing can go from a chic work outfit to something perfect for a night out.

Oversized white button-downs or longer white tunics can be paired with leggings or skinny jeans, with your choice of shoes. You can get creative with a white shirt by tying it at the waist or belting it. White shirts can even be worn over a slip dress or maxi dress.

Fitted white shirts can be tucked into jeans or pants for a more polished look. Of course, in the colder months, white shirts are great for layering.

Don’t forget to play with accessories. The right hat or statement necklace can completely transform an outfit.

How to Wear a White Shirt While Traveling

Travel is on hold for now, but it’s good to remember that white shirts are a traveler’s best friend. Packing a few white shirts can make it easy to create more outfits while packing less.

You can wear a white shirt with shorts and slip-on sneakers. Long white shirts can be used as a bathing suit coverup while on the beach or by the pool. Or, try wearing one with a maxi skirt.

If you’re headed to a colder vacation spot, white shirts are great layered or under sweaters. White shirts can be buttoned over a tank top or t-shirt, or worn with a sleeveless dress.

White shirtdresses are versatile and can be dressed up or down on vacation.

When choosing white shirts for travel, knits are a great wrinkle-free choice, as are no-iron white shirts. Banish wrinkles with steaming, and you’re good to go!

Need Help With Finding More Closet Essentials?

Closet versatility is a must for any busy woman. When your closet is versatile, you can easily mix and match outfits effortlessly. The white shirt is a classic must-have for creating countless outfits from casual to elegant. And for travel, this is a must, so pack white shirts for many outfit creations for the next time you’re on vacation for work or play.

Size Isn’t Standard

August 27, 2020 Lots of Luxe Fashion Tips, Proper Fit, Wardrobe

Body Positive Changes to Finding Clothes that Fit

Women have cursed their size for decades. Some decades have been worse on us than others (think the gaunt models of the 90s when anything more than super thin was out), and thankfully we’ve made some progress on how we view women’s bodies. Lately, the media shows a variety of shapes, from petite to full-figured, and models are more diverse than they ever have been. Still, worrying about size is a common problem for women. If we aren’t a particular size, we feel bad.

It’s safe to say that most women have worries about their size, whether it be “comparisonitis” with other women or how personal size stacks up with the “ideals” we see in the media. There is no shortage of women who are not happy with their clothing, size or visiting the fitting rooms. I think it’s time to change that!

Here’s the thing: It’s less about your size and more about fit. Let’s emphasize a good fit over a number that comes on the tag. When women wear well-fitting clothes, they feel good about themselves, regardless of size!

Clothing size is merely a number, a measurement. It has no emphasis on how kind, funny, or astonishingly beautiful you are. Size cannot quantify your beauty and worth. Let size be just a number and focus on how you feel instead.

One thing that can help you achieve feeling good in your clothes is connecting some valuable words to your personal style. What is your truth when it comes to your style? Is it cool, posh, outrageous, iconic, luxurious, or striking?

Here’s what to ask yourself: What words do I want to attribute to my personal style?

As I write this, I am reminded just how powerful words are. Having powerful words assigned to the clothing you wear gives your personal style definition that you can rely on when putting outfits together or purchasing new items each season.

This idea is an inspiration from Brenda Kinsel, who has written about her search for the perfect sized jacket. She finally narrowed it down to a petite medium, after trying on a few sizes, saying, “And you know how I knew it was the right size for me? The standard-sized jackets felt dowdy on me. I wouldn’t have bought it. I’m a spunky, spirited kind of gal, and dowdy isn’t in my style vocabulary. When I got to the petite medium, it felt just right.”

Brenda makes an excellent point here. If your personal style is defined as “spunky,” for example, then anything “dowdy” just can’t be right for you!

Want some more tips? Here are five tips for nailing your personal style and focusing on fit, not size.

1. People notice when you look and feel good, and size is irrelevant. Size is for you (and your personal stylist) to know. Nobody else knows or cares for that matter. When you walk into a room as your-best-dressed-self, you get noticed regardless of your size. That’s why focusing on fit is so much more important. When clothes fit, you know it, and you feel good. You’ll also attract a lot of compliments. Fit is more important than any number.

2. When you wear clothes that fit, you are much more comfortable AND your confidence level immediately goes up. Comfortable fitting clothes allows you to relax, be yourself, and focus on more important things. Time spent tugging and pulling on ill-fitting clothes is time wasted. Don’t waste your time trying to fit into the clothes.  Instead, concentrate on how well your clothes fit and watch how you’ll have an extra pep in your step.

3. Remember that size is often relative. Have you ever been one size in a store and a totally different size in another? Clothing sizes for women fluctuate from designer to designer. Some designers’ silhouettes might run small and others larger. Clothing size varies a lot, so don’t be so hard on yourself. If clothing size isn’t even down to a science, then it shouldn’t be fretted over! Even if you think you’re sure of your size, it’s always a good idea to take two or three sizes into the fitting room, so you can decide which fit feels best.

4. Your body changes a lot. Give yourself some credit for being a woman, first and foremost. Over the years, our bodies change, and therefore, clothing sizes change. Even if your weight has been the same for years, our bodies can suddenly hold weight in different areas, or water weight can be a culprit in tightly fitting clothes. Cut yourself some slack because this is normal, and it happens to every body. If anything doesn’t fit you anymore, it’s time to consign it or donate it! You get to buy new clothes that fit right and make you feel wonderful while another woman will get to enjoy your previously-loved clothing.

5. Fashion changes and so do sizes. That has nothing to do with you or your body. Designers change the way clothes fit and fashion trends can change the way things fit on us. Once again, find clothes that fit your body without worrying too much about the numbers.

A Closet Love Affair: How to Love Every Piece of Clothing in Your Closet

June 18, 2020 Lots of Luxe Fashion, Fashion Tips, Personal Stylist, Wardrobe

Do you have that feeling that you have nothing to wear but your closet is jam-packed with clothes? That feeling comes from not loving everything you have. It’s probably safe to say that most of your clothes aren’t your favorite. There are ways to turn that around and finally know what it feels like to love stepping into your closet to pick out an outfit.

We all know that incredible feeling when we put on a really special outfit. When you try it on and it’s perfect. You get so excited to wear it out for the first time. When you do, you feel stunning and attract tons of compliments.

Imagine having that feeling every day?

It’s so important to adore every piece of clothing in your closet. When you love everything in your closet, getting dressed is a breeze. Everything fits, you feel great in everything, and outfits are easy to create. You will never feel like you have nothing to wear when you love everything!

It’s time to say goodbye to anything that’s “just okay.” Life’s too short to wear anything that doesn’t make you feel great.

Here’s a quick guide to getting the wardrobe you want by creating a closet that you love.

Take a minimalistic approach

First things first: starting a wardrobe of all lovely things doesn’t start with a shopping spree, it starts with a purge. If you’re on a journey to love every piece of clothing in your closet, you’re about to learn that you probably love only a fraction of the things you currently have. It sounds almost awful to have fewer clothes. Who would want less?! But, here’s the thing: It’s more about quality over quantity. It doesn’t mean you’ll have less than you need or want, but it’s about having less clutter and fewer pieces of clothing that you don’t absolutely love. When you embrace the art of minimalism, you will only invest in pieces you love and get rid of anything that “doesn’t spark joy”, as Marie Kondo would say.

So begin taking inventory of what you have and get serious about donating or tossing anything that just isn’t quite right. If it’s old, worn-out, the wrong color, doesn’t fit (or flatter) it goes!, And don’t hold onto things out of guilt. Just because you spent money on an item and maybe didn’t wear it, doesn’t mean you have to keep it. Donations are a great way to not feel that guilt! When purging, remember, if you don’t love it, you won’t wear it.

Ponder your daily needs

It’s important to create a wardrobe that caters to your lifestyle. A practical, sustainable closet can be yours when you think about who you are, what you do, and what your wardrobe goals are. Where you live and what you do are definitely two determining factors when it comes to creating the perfect daily wardrobe with pieces that you love. Being realistic about your lifestyle can help you determine what to pack your closet with. Ruthlessly get rid of things that don’t fit, anything that doesn’t suit your lifestyle, and anything you don’t love.

When everything in your wardrobe fits your lifestyle, it’s easy to love everything! If your wardrobe is cluttered with blazers and pantsuits that you haven’t worn in years because you currently work from home, maybe it’s time to purge! If you don’t wear it, make room for what you’ll love and wear all the time.

The quickest way to a closet love affair…

What’s the secret to loving your closet? It’s having a personal stylist. If you’re feeling ambivalent about your wardrobe, it’s time to change that! That’s where a personal shopper and wardrobe stylist comes in.

A personal shopper takes the guesswork out of picking out clothes you’ll love. With a personal shopper and a wardrobe stylist, you can get the assistance you need to purge anything you don’t love, and only keep everything that suits your lifestyle, plus you can:

  1. Pick a color palette, which makes creating flattering outfits so simple.
  2. Define your personal style, which boosts your confidence and individuality.
  3. Organize what you already have, toss what needs to go, and fill in the blanks you’ve been missing.

You’ll save time, save money, and learn how you can maintain a closet full of clothes you absolutely love. Life is simpler when you don’t have to worry about what to wear.

Let’s get straight to the point: We are always busy. Especially women who tend to wear many hats. We juggle careers, marriages, kids, finances…all of it. Even while under a stay-at-home order, we’re busier than ever. And what we’re learning during this stay-at-home period is how convenient delivery and subscription services really are.

We can get anything delivered, from meal subscription kits to bags of fresh groceries to essentials from the pharmacy. Subscription services are also in every niche imaginable, from makeup to coffee, all tailored to your tastes and delivered to your door. We can even get food from restaurants that traditionally don’t deliver brought straight to us wherever we are via food delivery services. Even when we’re not super busy, it’s easy to use concierge-y services to help us out while we kick-back.

Another benefit of these delivery services is they can be automated, so we don’t even have to think about them. And the coolest thing is, none of these services break the bank…not even close. I’m trying really hard to see any downside here!

A No-Fail Wedding Guest Style Guide for Her

April 15, 2020 Lots of Luxe Event, Fashion, Fashion Tips, How To, Style Tips

Weddings are exciting events to look forward to! Getting the invitation is a moving experience as you anticipate the big day with loved ones and friends. And then, the invitation addresses attire in two words that don’t even go together: Beach formal. What’s that even mean?

Before we decide exactly what to wear to a wedding, we have to decide how dressy to get. That’s where it gets tricky. What’s the difference between white tie and black tie? Black tie optional? What about an invitation that is vague and doesn’t mention a dress code?

Don’t worry, I have answers.

I’ve created a quick guide on wedding attire and what to wear, in all scenarios.

Quickly though, some very general rules:

  1. Women wear dresses and men wear suits.
  1. Women don’t wear white, in any form. This rule is an old rule that falls within the social norm to not outshine a bride on her wedding day. Unless the dress code is specifically noted in the invitation, e.g., a “white wedding” or “black and white attire only”, stay away from white dresses.
  1. Time of day matters. Day weddings and night weddings mean different things in terms of how formal to get. Day weddings are automatically less formal than night weddings. So, an early afternoon ceremony followed by a brunch reception means lighter colors, cocktail dresses, sundresses, informal maxi dresses, and the like. Evening weddings that go on into the night mean more formal dresses, longer lengths, deeper colors, fancier accessories, etc.

White Tie

This is the most formal dress code for a wedding, and it’s typically not too common but it happens. Be sure to wear a formal, full-length gown in rich hues or black. Most white tie events happen in the evening, so night wedding rules apply. Feel free to go all out on your ultra-formal look: Updos, makeup, and statement jewelry.

Black Tie

Black tie is more common and these weddings are less formal than a white tie event but still require proper dressing up. Wear a floor-length gown or formal cocktail dress. Depending on the venue, a formal jumpsuit can be appropriate as well.

Black Tie Optional

The name may be confusing, but it simply means that this event is a bit more toned down than a typical black tie event. You have some wiggle room here on how fancy to get. The black tie dress code is a good jumping off point: Wear a floor-length or cocktail dress.

Cocktail Attire

Cocktail attire is fancy but more laid back than black tie. These weddings are festive events where you are free to dress less formally than the previously mentioned style rules. Cocktail dresses or skirts and blouses are appropriate.

Beach Formal

Beach formal is an upscale beach wedding where flip flops are never allowed. Maxi dresses, knee-length sundresses, and wedge sandals all fall within the beach formal dress code. Remember that wedges and espadrilles are your best friend, as heels and sand never work. Makeup and hair should be polished, yet much more relaxed, like beachy waves or a simple chignon.

Casual Attire

Casual attire is laid back wedding attire. There is still some dressing up to do, just much less formally. Wear sundresses, relaxed maxi dresses, or a skirt and blouse. Subtle accessories are fine.

What to do when the invitation is vague?

When the invitation doesn’t mention the dress code, there are a few clues to follow to gauge how to dress. First, how fancy is the invitation? The invite is a good clue as to the formality of the coming event. If the invitation is very formal, consider black tie or cocktail attire. A more casual invitation means less formal.

Second, with a bit of investigation about the venue, you can also gauge how dressy to get. Where will the wedding be held? Use the venue space as an indicator.

Need extra assistance during wedding season?

Formal dress codes often mean getting help from a personal stylist. New gowns and cocktail dresses definitely require tailoring to look and feel your best at the event. I can guide you through wedding season! If you need anything, consider reaching out. That’s what I’m here for

XOXO, Melrose.
